i see 😒 the problem is they take the popular approach i guess; would you happen to know what the real difference is between at and xt keyboard? maybe thats the easiest way out? i mean noone is going to reinvent the wheel without getting money out of it

are you sure this cannot be done with some very basic microcontroller testboard by using its gpio pins? im no pro, but thats how i understand those things

it's going to take a while for that idea to wear off. it's forced via software on us, that is imho the main reason; someone mentioned windows 7 memory needs as a reason to upgrade - thats not the whole truth, windows 7 can be cut down to sub 1gb, it's the slower hard disk operation and more …

working - mostly yes for 486, dunno for 386, bugs were common back then though; booting - only if you're lucky (usually done via floppy); mostly amended by an additional controller;

microsoft and uninstalling does not go together; as for IE4 the shell extensions can be omitted or disabled(i dont remember) also you can just switch to the old windows 3.1 shell which is what i liked best (fast even on my hardware); as for the crashing i can't really say anything - anything …
