I just looked at dosbox-mb6.tar.gz from https://archive.org/download/DOSBox-Megabuild, which is a checkout of the plain dosbox trunk at r3661 and allows comfortable diffing. The changes you’re interested in will be mostly or completely confined to src/hardware/dbopl.*

This seems to be a DOSBox-X issue. I tried it on Linux aarch64, and it behaves just as you described. Vanilla DOSBox works.

You are doing 8 byte loads/stores so of course it would copy 8 bytes (in each plane, if the graphics registers are set up like intended). This amounts to 64 pixels.

No wait, I can reproduce it, using edit.com, like you did. The other editor that I used earlier (IBM’s E) had no problem writing the file. Likely has something to do with SHARE.EXE emulation.

The problem is almost certainly the space in the path. The easiest way to circumvent this would probably be to use the short name (progra~1 or the like).

It might have been Ctrl + Alt + +/- on the numeric block. At least I think it was this on my 286.
