I don't know what you mean by "Windows XMS driver". Do you mean HIMEM? Because HIMEM is fine. It won't cause those issues. The one you need to get rid of is EMM386, but it might not even be causing this. It's just a first easy thing to try.

SVGA compatibility setting (along with "fix jerky motion") is in the config settings somewhere. There's an (undocumented?) command line switch for it too. However, with my ET4000 I was never able to get that setting to fix anything.

I've had memory managers do weird things like that before, yeah. Try not restarting in "MS-DOS Mode", but placing menu options in your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to either load or not load Windows (you'd have to modify MSDOS.SYS also, I believe)... OR you could just hit F8 as it starts booting and …

Could be a memory manager issue, try switching from EMM386 to JEMMEX, or using HIMEM only

Okay -- use this project here: UNISOUND - Universal ISA PnP Sound Card Driver for DOS v0.76b to initialize the card without leaving drivers loaded in memory. That will free up some for you. As for the video card, probably worth it to remove it, clean the terminals, and reseat.

Opti sound card drivers? What sound card is this? A 386 should have an SB 2.0 or SB Pro, or whatever cheap SB Pro clone you can get to put in there. No drivers required.

Does your CONFIG.SYS load HIMEM at all? Try loading that by itself without the EMM and see if the game runs.

Upgrade to 1 gig or more of RAM and use Debian XFCE. Also upgrade the graphics if possible. The thing is PC133 doesn't go higher than 1GB I believe, and 512MB sticks are very hard to find by. Even if a find two of them, I hope the motherboard supports it. And it's even harder to find PCI graphics …
