Well, you know, for the T30 I personally would really recommend keeping it as a Windows 98 machine. DOS is really for Pentium I/II/III stuff, with real DOS sound cards. The Pentium 4 is way, way overkill for DOS. I would look for a Pentium I laptop if you want pure DOS, if I were you. Edit: Wow, …

That's a great machine. I have the 460CDT, which is basically the same thing with a 166MHz MMX and no floppy drive, just CD. I've been very pleased with it for all the reasons you stated above.

Seems like you'd need the caps out of the circuit to properly test them. I really think your problems are due to that horrible dirt on the chip socket. Have you tried it after cleaning yet?
