a pci ide controller should work and also may give you better transfer speeds that bios may have a 32gb cap, or even a 8.4gb cap, don't know the year it came that computer

the motherboard may require a bios update, remember that the "L2" cache on 486 motherboards is on the motherboard, the processor has nothing to do here

about the hdd problem, it may be an incompatibility with the bios, most likely because of the 504mb bios limit, you should use an overlay software like ezdrive, or use the xt ide bios on a nic

the problem with a mx4000 or a fx5200 pci are the drivers, they're not optimized for such older processor a good match is a tnt2 m64, a gf2 mx or even a sis 315 (through it doesn't support palletized textures = glquake looks wrong, and in some d3d games the textures seems to be of lower quality)

what about cinebench? but the older ones: 2003 supports windows 2000 and up and I know of the existence of cinebench 2000 but can't find a copy, that one should support 98se and maybe 95

well there's a device that replaces the optical drive on the sega saturn and sega dreamcast, giving them the posibility of using micro sd cards in theory it should be feasible, but it seems that nobody has ever put into that work

i think that part of the issues that you have are because the hardware you are using is not particularly good, specially the processor and the chipset i have a similar motherboard. but it has a core 2 duo e4400 and 2gb of ram, also has a geforce 210, and is very suggish in xp, 7 and even lubuntu
