The internal multiplier is just that: internal. You have no influence over it. Except when it's meant to be changed by software. Not on the 486.

It's a standard dip socket as far as I know, just match the spacing on farnell and you're good to go. You should be able to find it in a competent local electronics shop.

Messed around some more with my Shuttle HOT-553 (430hx). After the BIOS upgrade the thing does not boot anymore, it has issues with the disk controller. Luckily I saved the old one, but that seems to have the 8gb limit. Tried a tekram scsi card, and booted with a via sata/ide controller. Enough for …

I remember the caps blowing on the 5vsb line in these supplies right after the 2 year warranty. They are safe though.

Perfect. Now just measure the voltage across the battery and leave the computer on for a couple of hours. Measure again. I'd put the battery in a small plastic container if it will be stored in this position so it contains any potential leak. It will still do some corrosion damage to the case but …

Ok, sure, they might charge. But for about 5-10x times less money you can get some very good quality long life AA batteries that will last around 5-10 years.

Eneloops are nice. But... with the trickle charge and a typical usage pattern of a retro PC I'm not sure AA/AAA will ever charge.

LiIon should not be played around with in a circuit that potentially charges it. It needs a proper monitoring circuit. Are NiMh 100% leakproof? I think not. No battery is. The battery currently on the board is a GP60BNKx3 NiCd so I'm guessing it's rechargable, I'll remove it by chopping its legs off and find something suitable and rechargable to connect via the ext battery header, probably a 18650 3.7V rechargable and its holder fixed onto a suitable part of the case …
