Re: Microsoft MSE 'killed' on Windows XP, temp fix available

Isn't there some other free AV option? I thought they killed MSE for XP long ago. I didn't know there were crafty hacks to get around that. Basically what they did is to make it throw up a nag screen at every single boot some time back. Going back one version fixed that. Now they've again made an …

Re: Microsoft MSE 'killed' on Windows XP, temp fix available

in Milliways
I wonder what kinds of horrible unpatched vulnerabilities XP has accumulated. Quite a few, like every version of Windows, likely (one issue that anyone should fix now is to disable NetBIOS on Windows, because apparently there's a major security hole in its implementation that goes all the way back …

Re: 1998 Bondi Blue iMac won't boot

A later Japanese rerelease of the game has updated files right on the …

It's a drop-in …

Re: Assistance finding an 8-port RJ45 jack for PC

He says it's for an 8-port specialty NIC card some client of his wants designed, but only if it's possible to. In that case, make the card single or dual slot with one or two connectors, and the 8-port jack plugs into those connectors via an adapter board on the outside (basically sandwiching the …

Re: Sudden death

Well, shoot... So I left the computer for about ten minutes unplugged and with the battery out, and after powering it back up the audio magically has started working again. Something I should have tried before calling the warranty people, who told me that since I have repartitioned the hard drive, …

Re: How does a system admin deal with users?

in Milliways
@SqualStrife: That. And a lot of company IT departments don't understand that. However, it does not mean you have to let users install anything they want. Personally I never understood why a previous employer did not block certain entertainment websites or let some users to install iTunes while at …
