Re: Post your 'current' PC

Hopefully someday will upgrade my machine, but still it does all i need really good someday, i will get a ryzen, ddr4 ram, more hdd and a better gpu (the last is not an issue or a necessity) I'm sure your system is perfectly fine. I also have an older PC that is nearly on-par with my current use …

Re: New Win98 installation

Ok Wow, I'm dumb. Thanks for the tip. I need OAKCDROM.SYS off of my Windows 98 startup disk in order to get this running. ....OK, worked perfectly fine. Whohoo! Simple mistakes that it took you guys to point out. Thanks a bunch. Now I can tweak things to get it all working right. Get some of this …

New Win98 installation

I was given an IBM Aptiva E85. Specs below Motherboard: V58XA ATX CPU: AMD K6-2 300MHz RAM: 64MB PC-66 (2x32MB) HDD: Quantum Bigfoot 5.25" IDE 6.4GB Video: ATI Rage 3D+DVD 2MB (on MB) 3dfx: Diamond Monster 3D II 8MB PCI Sound: Crystal CS-4237B (on MB) It has a CD-ROM and a standard floppy drive. Re: Pentium 1 - 60 MHZ - Graphics Card

I don't have many DOS games, but I did download Tomb Raider and I can't get it to work on my Voodoo2 cards at all. This issue was described in a previous thread over a year ago and still has not been resolved. Mainly I stick within Windows for games, but I think with THAT system, I was going to have …

Re: Pentium 1 - 60 MHZ - Graphics Card

A Pentium 233MMX is already bottlenecked by V1. i consider a 166Mhz CPU optimum for V1, unless you want to do crude things like running Q3A.. If I have a 200MHz non-MMX Pentium in a Socket 7 MB with 64MB of EDO RAM (60ns) and running Windows 95 OSR 2 with an ATI Rage IIc 2MB PCI graphics card, …

Re: Pentium MMX - Voodoo1 or 2 and paired with?

Why would you have such an overkill combination like that? Might as well go further back than the GeForce/Radeon timeline and get a Matrox card for 2D and just use the Voodoo1 for 3D gaming. If you want to max out 95-98 games, you'd need a Pentium 3 and 256MB of RAM anyway. The P54 is holding you …

Re: HD-AUDIO vs AC'97 and my issue

Researched more, it expects a 1,000 ohm resistor to ground. But then the jack sense lines are also wired totally differently. in HD Audio, Pin 7 is the SEND for the jack sense lines. The two jacks have different resistors before going to their respective pins (6 and 10). So no, I can't re-wire it. …

Re: Gaming Card for Compaq Presario?

At the MOMENT, it's using the old 300-watt PSU. But this one doesn't have any PCI-E power ports, so if I got a nice sized graphics card for it, I'll be changing that out for a more modern one with those cables. I can use that PSU to maybe run an even older Pentium (Win95) system I have plans for.

Re: GTX 480 - dumb mistake

That Kryonaut by Thermal Grizzly is the most expensive (by volume) TIM I’ve ever bought, but it’s crazy good... I used the last of it on this GPU die. I might get another tube. I usually use AS5 for attaching heat sinks, though. I can buy two tubes that have 50% more TIM per tube for slightly more …

Re: Gaming Card for Compaq Presario?

This is honestly already the most powerful XP machine I've ever messed with, since it has a dual-core processor in it. I'm used to XP and below being single-core, Vista and above multi-core. The Pentium happens to be in there because it was free. It would have been a throw out at some later point …

Re: GTX 480 - dumb mistake

Well, these are those tiny-ass capacitors that surround the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) underneath the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader). I have no idea how in the world I would even go about replacing them and they're so tiny that my eyes have trouble distinguishing the end-cap to see if it's still …

Re: Gaming Card for Compaq Presario?

Interesting. Reviewing the specs now. Radeon HD 4850 Interface Type: PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (wouldn't the card bottleneck with only 1.0?) Max Resolution: 2560 x 1600 (Too high for me to ever use - I usually top out at 1920 x 1080) Interfaces: DVI-I (dual link), VGA, HDMI Graphics Engine: ATI Radeon HD …
