I tried doing codec fixes before I wiped. None of it worked. The game wouldn't play any FMVs and would lock up at a certain point trying to start the game (since the 3D graphics start DURING the first FMV with Aeris.

Yeah, I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.20 myself on my Windows 98 built, runs fine for small websites. Big modern ones lock the whole system up trying to render all that stuff. But at least it's better than IE 6. And I use an old compatible version of Adobe Reader for PDF files.

Ran a full MemTest x86 on the Athlon XP system and it came back clean. All 1 GB of memory. I did that last night. So now I'm running the exact same CD-ROM on my Pentium II build to see what it says about the 2x 128MB chips. I wonder if I should have turned ECC on for this test or not...
