Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

Yes, that's almost without a doubt the issue here. A P55 CPU without internal 3.3V connection, and thus floating BF0, in an older mobo jumpered for 1.5x, will run at 2x. It can be kind of verified by jumpering for 3x multiplier, the CPU should end up running at 2.5x. Yup, that was the issue. I've …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

What about an ATX PSU with an AT adapter? I don't really trust most AT PSUs anymore. This what I'd need? https://www.amazon.com/20-Pin-Power-Supply-Adapter-Cable/dp/B01EDGS0KI Yep, that will work. If you don't mind waiting a while, you can get them on eBay from China for $3.25 a piece though. …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

Regarding testing: Try running a test program like GoldMemory or Memtest. Try with L2 cache disabled first to isolate the ram, and then with it on afterwards. Thatl root out any ram induced problems. Bad cache in particular can manifest as verious anomalies. I did passes with and without cache, RAM …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

Welp, I tried a bunch of different configurations with the RAM, either it's all bad or none of it is. I downclocked the CPU to 200mhz, made absolutely no difference whatsoever. I'm going to swap it for a Pentium 90 I found with the motherboard I'm currently using, I'll try that and see if things …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

Turns out that only kind of helped. Duke3D still locked up after awhile. I could still CTRL+ALT+DEL at least. I'm at my f***ing wits end. Once on boot it locked up randomly while loading the midi synth thing, upon reset most of my files were renamed garbage characters, gone again on reboot. I've …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

My computer hates my current AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. I went back to an older one from my old IDE hard drive and now things work. WHAT THE HELL. I will post pictures of the "bad" ones and the "good" ones shortly. EDIT: all that's missing from the config.sys in both is D:1 H:5 I marked the bad …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

I guess my lack of understanding is why the same exact thing is happening, except with a DIFFERENT mobo and a DIFFERENT CPU. The old motherboard/Pentium 120 were doing the same thing to me last night, so there has got to be a common denominator in here somewhere that I 'm just not seeing. Should I …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

So here's what happened now: I found a MB-8500TTD kicking around in my dad's old stuff and what do you know, it supports the 233 MMX. Hooray! I got it all put together in my case with everything hooked up, I now have 40mb RAM instead of 32, I have a heat sink on the CPU and a fan. If I try to …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

Try reseating the RAM as well as the CPU if reseating the RAM doesn't help. Same for any expansion cards. I'll reseat the CPU once I get more thermal paste. The last one I bought was only good for one use. I'm not even sure that's the problem. Might also replace the CPU fan, I'm bound to have …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

Welp, I put everything back exactly as it was before I started. Now it crashes and reboots in the middle of games, reboots if I try to play NFSSE, and hard locks if I try to reinstall NFSSE. I can only assume the thermal paste got f'ed somewhere along the way, or I've broken something else I'm not …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

I have that same motherboard and the fastest I ever managed out of it was an AMD K6-2 500 running at 300MHz @ 50MHz FSB. I've never tried running a 233 MMX on it, but the currently installed CPU is a K6-2 400 running at 210MHz @ 60MHz FSB. The advice further up about the voltage etc is worth …

Re: Put a Pentium MMX 233mhz CPU in my DOS machine, still reads as Pentium-S 120mhz. What am I missing?

That board will eventually fry a split rail cpu It needs a VRM to run the pmmx other option is to hack the vio to 3 volts and hope it stays stable. Also You will need to jumper for 1.5 multiplier if you want 233mhz, you may overload the onboard power regulator at 3.3volts standard voltage. There is …
