It's worth checking the Dos 6 conventional memory tricks thread. It will tell you a lot more than I can, including the smallest cdrom and mouse drivers, alternatives to mscdex, etc 😀

I messaged ProServa here (giving an email address to reply to) and in eBay, offering to buy all the bezels, to be shipped to CPUShack. I have had no reply to either message, which makes me feel like he is an opportunist or scammer (I hope I'm wrong and that he is merely disorganised).

The "random 486 chips" are BIOS chips for 486 boards. It'll not be easy to figure out exactly what boards they come from unless you can dump the BIOS images. Then someone may have an idea.

I think it was 1999 that I upgraded to a K6-2/500. I don't remember what else was in the system. Until then I had been using a 486 DX33, so it was a huge upgrade.

Found it online. SET has been valid in config.sys since MS-DOS 6.0. Don't know about other versions of DOS.

Does using SET work from config.sys in all versions of DOS?? The MS-DOS Bible (covers up to v4) only shows it working in autoexec.bat. Que Using MS-DOS 6.2 Special Edition show it as valid. I don't have any books between the two so not sure when it became valid for config.sys, but it's reasonable …

Do you know the sSpec of that CPU? If not, can you show a CPU-Z screenshot? If it's a SL7QB, you might be able to install a 64-bit OS (I know you can on the P4P800 SE)

I received a copy a couple of days ago. Glad this thread came up, as I had no idea it required Steam. I'm not generally a gamer, and have no desire to sign up to play online. Most of my FPS games are purely to see if they have a demo mode for benchmarking 😀
