I don't use freedos, but I use cutemouse and himemx, both of which appear to have resulted from or been motivated by freedos existing. So freedos hasn't failed me. But it's open source, so you're expected to make it better as needed. If you don't already know coding, you just have more work to do.

The mame thing seems cool. That said, I should say that pcbi (under my development) isn't intended as a pcem front end in the utilitarian sense. Think of them as friends with benefits.

Go for it. I'll make some docs for the 3d file format etc. at some point, probably useful for adding custom components. Although with some interpretative effort the source code probably explains it too. I convert from blender-exported obj files, but the converter code needs to be cleaned up.

Good capture cards go for as low as $20 on ebay at times. Just have a generic search for them, wait around if need be, get one and set it up, and forget software capture (not to say software filter emulation isn't a valid pursuit).
