Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

3. Birthday splurge Small update: as a part of my birthday celebration I spent some cash on a few items for this machine. A used 1 Gb Ethernet card, a brand new USB3 card… 20171104_1-usbLan.JPG …and a PL-P4/W adapter. 20171104_2-plp4w.JPG This adapter was sold with a bundled 1.6 GHz Northwood, but …

Jade Falcon wrote: I can't recall, are 423 CPU's locked like the Piii? I could be wrong but I think you can lower the multi on 423 P4's. Locked. Unlocked downwards would make troubleshooting much easier, like you say. I'll keep playing with the machine on the weekend and see if I can squeeze some …

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

P4, RDRAM, Modern? about 3 differ levels of obsolete in that title :P But I like what your trying to achieve , and will be following this thread :) Yeah, the irony of the title is not lost on me :) Thanks for the interest! Nice work. Not many go this far to OC SK423 systems. Really neat to see such …

2. Modding and overclocking, pt.2 A second experiment with the voltage regulator. This time instead of just getting rid of the resistor going into the FB pin, I put it back in place and created and setup a voltage divider with a 50 kOhm potentiometer I had laying around. The idea: report less …

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

I always look at hwbot for guidance and a rough guide on what to expect 😀 Iguess your "max stable" claim comes from superpi and wprime results? No way I'll touch that adapter. It's cheaper to find a 478 board with RDRAM support to "spiritually" continue this project than buying that.

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

2ghz is pushing it for such a system. Maybe a 1.9ghz or 2ghz p4 would help? Also there are 423 to 478 adapters out there. True, I am just getting greedy about the OC. I'll try to come up with some other mod to give the CPU even more juice, around 1.9 V or so, and see if it stabilizes. I have also …

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

1. Modding and overclocking, pt.1 Since recapping didn't help increase/stabilize the voltage going into the CPU, and I need more voltage to overclock, something needed to be done. The first attempt was naive: Willamettes have 5 pins to set voltage, and grounding all of them sets the voltage to 1.85 …

0. Motherboard maintenance I have successfully changed each and every capacitor in the motherboard, even ones from circuits I know I won't use like the audio output. A few pictures… The board before any surgery was performed 20171021_recap-1.jpg 54 capacitors later, here's the board completely …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

wow, not many caps... Thankfully, makes for easy maintenance (the board of my other project has 54 capacitors to exchange… it made up for this one). The system boots up properly, btw. Since I am currently recapping another board I haven't had time to test more than that, but at least I didn't …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

A recap after all… I recently started a new project and one of the first things to do was recap the whole motherboard. Since I needed to add some extra dollars to the order to get free shipping from mouser (recommended, btw, super-fast shipping and delivery), I figured I'd order new caps for this …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

Thanks a lot, I'll see what I can work out with the shipping. (I'm in Europe but the shipping still costs 50% more then the items). I'm thinking maybe at purchasing 4 of these since I actually have a second AP550 mobo at home (but sadly lacking the VRM for the second CPU, which means more $ …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

Just read your topic with great interest, as I have a Compaq Ap550 and two 1.4ghz Tualatins waiting to be put to good use. Can you tell me where did you sourced the slotkets and how much did you paid for them? I got them on eBay (EDIT: forum doesn't like the ü , so I'll post as code for copy/paste) …
