They were definitely licensed because only particular developers' games were in the market, USGOLD, Sierra and Lucasarts for example …

Here in Turkey a local retailer sold original games in Betamax casette boxes with Black & White manuals. They later went even cheaper and sold the games in plastic shrinkwrap with no boxes at all. 4238 is probably a 3D integrated version of the 4237 and not the 4235 which was actually corrected in 4236. 4236/4237 both have very good FM Synthesis (even though it is distinctly different from Yamaha OPL3) so stick with the onboard sound chip for best compatibility and quality of the stuff you …
