Re: 486 cooling ?

Depends / No/ No/ No/ No/ Yes/ Yes - /Yes Use Coolingpaste, plastic Clipps or 486 Coolers(a little rare) I didn't use it Normally you don't need to. It could be possible, but I would not recommend it. (could heat up and lose their gluing capability, also the size would not be optimal) I hope that …

Re: Old games that had CD Audio tracks?

in DOS
"Might and Magic - World of Xeen" There have been audio tracks?? Really? I'm wondering, because it is a SC-55(V1) Game and all the sounds and music are created via midi... Would love to hear the tracks 😉 But thanks for this list 😀 Edit: ...probably the voices? Forgot about them...

Re: Best Videoformat for 486 DOS-Machine?

in Marvin \ Video
How did you converted the video or generated it? Do you know a way to play cinepak movies in DOS? And if possible: is there source code available or c/c++ header with libraries? Have you some examples, regarding the output quality? I don't mind playing it at 10-15 fps, if just the quality is okay 😉 …

Re: Best Videoformat for 486 DOS-Machine?

in Marvin \ Video
Nope, not right now, because I thought there was just a Win 3.x player. I will take a look at the files. There is written, that there are only the player, but maybe there is a little bit more in the archives. Could work, if the right files are there.

Re: Best Videoformat for 486 DOS-Machine?

in Marvin \ Video
I read the first thread, but it is mostly really about pentium pcs and mpeg. SMK is also mentioned also smackpy(?) I don't know it. But mostly both are about mpeg or newer formats. The list of Standard Def Steve is really a great work. But a 486 is just mentioned once running Win95 and testing the …

Best Videoformat for 486 DOS-Machine?

in Marvin \ Video
Hi there! I was wondering, which format would be best used in a 486dx2/66 Dos Machine. I know, there was the MPEG format around, but just if you've got the right card. There is the SMK Video Format, which I would like to use, but couldn't find the propper SDK (If someone knows where to get it?) Also …

Re: Game Specs Testing

Looking through all the Box pics on mobygames there are just 2 with RAM specs. One states 8 MB one 4 MB. BS is just an example. I'm trying to find out what min. specs were common at the end of the DOS era especially when it comes to 486 system (because for me a Pentium is a Win95 machine). I'm …

Game Specs Testing

Hello there! I was wondering what the minimum specs for late old DOS PC games have been. So I started digging around and came to this conclusion: 486dx2/66 (of course...) 8 MB RAM 1x or 2x Speed 1 or 2MB Graphics 50-300 MB Hard Drive (depend on the installation option) Soundcard (Soundblaster …

Re: QuickBASIC: Any DirectQB/BWSB tutorials available?

in Milliways
8bit 22khz waves was quite common 😉 because it didn't take so much space and it sounds okay. If you want to go further I would recommend using a different language, because qbasic is a little bit slow in comparison to pascal/C/C++. You will find yourself using assembler really quick.

Re: Old games that had CD Audio tracks?

in DOS
Could someone please create a complete list at the beginning of this thread? What is considered old? Which time period? I'm not sure if they have been mentioned: DOS: Lost in Time (mixed with the Speech) Earthwom Jim 2 (1 was mentioned I guess?) Realms of Arkania 1-3 (SC-55/88) Tomb Raider (Original …

Re: DOS Development Forum?

in Milliways
I would really prefer a board here, which is dedicated to Development Software on old Systems (DOS, Win3.1, Win95...), because there are so many topics you could talk about and experience you could share. Starting by the different compilers, IDEs up to complete Engines or Software, which has been …

Re: Compressed digital soundformats

in Marvin \ Sound
That's better, so I can use a higher quality... 😁 Has someone with an 486DX2/66 tested a mp3 under dos (for example MXPlayer) and could tell me the cpu workload, using different mp3s? and in comparison the workload of an ADPCM?

Re: Compressed digital soundformats

in Marvin \ Sound
half frequency (22 KHz) Ah good... that explains it :D With just half of the data processing, it works for me in Win95 and Win 3.1 as well :D But I will try out ADPCM first, because it sounds like a good compromise between cpu/space demand. Got also acceptable sound quality with some strange …

Re: What is TDMA?

in Marvin \ Sound
Probably (ESS?) Transparent Direct Memory Access(T DMA), which should map an ISA DMA Controller to a PCI Controller, so you can use a PCI Card (or in this case Chip) like a ISA Card.

Re: Compressed digital soundformats

in Marvin \ Sound
My DX4/100 plays MP3s up to 192 kbps just fine using WinAmp 2.95 on Win95B. CPU has almost full load then, but you can still click around in Windows. This is quite interesting, because I've got a AMD 5x86/133@160 and it plays 192 kbps stereo 44.1khz if and only if you are doing nothing else, with …
