I had a Compaq that had the "Athlon 4" CPU I think at 1400mhz? and a Savage Twister-K graphics chip. It was pretty meh. Wasn't the CPUs fault for sure, just overall quality was let down by the graphics. I'm not for sure what chipset was used.

Try looking up the manufacturer (of your laptop) specification for supported processors. If the maker of your laptop never released a product in that series with support for the chip in question, then they had zero reason to ever write a BIOS to provide support for it.

I would go with 98SE there are a few PCI sound cards that can provide usable support in DOS, and most are cheap as well. P3 really is only fast enough for early XP anyway. I run Win95 on my Cyrix 5x86 with 32MB of ram. I do have 3.1 on another drive that I used to use with this PC, but other than for nostalgia I found it to be pretty finicky and pointless. I see no reason why you shouldn't run Win95 with a true blue Pentium, even in you are in DOS 90% of the time.
