Early socket 7: something very compatible, i would choose a trident 9680 with 2mb No reason to choose any Trident card over S3/late Cirrus Logic cards. 9680 is a horrible performer.

Er no, the extra chip only tells you it uses some form of parity. For regular parity you need one bit extra for every 8 bits, for ECC you need two bits extra. Doesn't look like simple parity - 28-pin chip.

Here is another vote for 2x Geforce 7900 GTX 7800GTX 512mb SLI are 20% cooler. Also 1000% rarer, so bonus points for that too. If you can find any for cheap that is Quadro FX 5500 cards are probably even cheaper right now and the best available option from G7x family.

Is it just me or is that board tiny? Big man hands + deceiving perspective. This board is standard ATX size. Pretty much same size as ASUS P5A for example.

if it could be an issue caused by the GPU's having way more vram than system ram? That's an AGP feature.

AGP slot has nothing to do with it. Most likely those cards are too power hungry. they have something to do with level conversion on the data lines to protect the GPU from 5v old motherboards Pretty much all of them has voltage regulator for 3.3v, so that's probably not the case.

Slow as molasses as I remember from the few I had the displeasure of working on. Usual 423 systems were SDRAM based, so yeah... crippled CPU with crippled memory.

1. Phils benchmarks are not taking into account image quality settings on more modern cards. 2. You need extremely powerful CPU to avoid any limitations in certain scenarios. So it's really pointless to "match" specific CPU-GPU pair outside of notorious examples like Voodoo I.

PCCHIPS board will require some tricky fixing though. One PCB lane was severed, so it's impossible to use external cache in that bank.
