If I had to choose something that old and crunchy with 70+ Hz - probably would look for late professional NEC/EIZO 19 inch IPS/PVA panels (NEC MultiSync LCD1990SXi comes to mind). Basically you get 1280x960 screen with very advanced scaling and additional vertical resolution for Windows GUI …

LCD in general, will always translate VGA high color mode as text mode (720X400). 320X240 will work as 640x480.

Stable 60fps? Duke Nukem 3D - yeah, probably possible, but not with S3 Trio3D. Quake - just nope. Matrox Mystique/Millennium II was a popular 2D choice back then.

To be fair, modern 1920x1200 monitors aren't any better in that regard. For the same price or less you can grab 1080p with 144Hz+ or even 1440p 75Hz+ with deals, albeit without nice adjustable stand.

Probably made as a replacement for office/studio environment, for people that absolutely need the exact same thing they had 10 years ago, so Dell does not care about regular customers.

F.E.A.R. has horizontal scaling and looks better on 16:9 screen. Quake 4 also scales horizontally, but requires some tinkering.

Eh? There are games that natively support 16:10, so not sure what you mean by it won't benefit any games? Depends on how your games tackle scaling. Some older games can understand widescreen formats, but they scale from vertical resolution, unlike modern games, so you'll get reduced viewing angle. By itself, 16:10 is a useless standard which will not benefit any games than can understand widescreen, but …

The first 8800 Ultra card I bought ran super hot even at idle. I replaced the cooler with a nice Zalman heatpipe cooler and also used a Zalman cooler for the VRMs and RAM though I did have to mod the VRM cooler to fit with the GPU cooler. Runs very cool now. My guess is that that original cooler …

NForce 2 chipset can't bumpgate. At all. It's not BGA. Both chips are connected to PCB through wires, like old CPUs in ceramic packaging. While chip external connection is indeed BGA, that's rarely an issue.

You can play DOS games in DOS mode, so it's fine. Games like Red Alert and Warcraft II Battle.net will work fine too.
