Why not just use Winkawaks for Neo Geo titles? It's so much better than MAME (plus it can also emulate the CPS1 and CPS2 arcade boards)

Maybe you setup the ultradir parameter wrong. Quoting the DOSBox wiki: Of particular note is the ultradir option, which must be set to the path to the patch files inside DOSBox. I've had nothing in my mind, because it's obvious that the MS-DOS in Windows 98 is not going to be compatible with most DOS games. It isn't the real thing.

Go with DOSBox. Is the easiest method by far. Also, the DOS in Win98 isn't 100% compatible with most DOS games. So go with DOSBox.

Why do you want to use Adlib for General MIDI anyway? There are much more convienent ways to make General MIDI work easier and sound better, for example with a soundfont.
