You forgot to describe the problem - does it not boot? That would mean older VRM design and you either need: 1 socket 370 P3 + slotket adapter with Voltage selection jumpers to force CPU into running at 1.8V 2 mod your Slot1 P3 with tape and soldered bridges to force it into 1.8V 3 replace 8.1 VRM …

$5 salea clone snooping on /DACK, DRQ, IRQ together with I2S stream and something to decode port 220 access will be plenty to start with. Might not even need I2S, just seeing how long the pauses are between DRQ and port 220 reads/writes would tell a lot.

Afaik MAME isnt cycle accurate, I dont think MAME SB16 is clicking. Might be good for tracing 8052 firmware execution, but not for definitive verification of potential fixes.

CF cards have fully standardized ATA mode. I see two possibilities 1 CF card too modern and nobody bothered to test ATA mode. 2 DOS/BIOS issues with size. to test 1 replace CF card with older one, to test 2 make just one small partition at the start of the card.

I dont hear clicking in that chipmunk sample 🙁. We really need a standalone test for clicking, small program doing nothing else but playing single cycle DMA with samples exuberating the problem.

Jitter wont be a problem if you are doing sample rate conversion in the middle. But why would you bother with modding SB16 instead of making whole sound blaster compatible card from scratch based on for example PicoGUS.

how about rotating wavetable connector 180 to make it stick up instead of down, or even 90 and make it go sideways. I dont know exact dimensions of wavetable modules so no idea if sideways would work.
