I remember reading an article in PC Mag or maybe Computer Shopper (back when they had REAL ARTICLES and were just HUGE) talking about how the 286 had "too much power" for the desktop and belonged in the server room. This might've been in '87 at the latest.

Could simply be the drive is dead. If the drive was *just used* to install Win98, then surely there's a boot disk that was used to access the drive for the installation. Boot from that diskette and see if it's found in DOS. If it's dead, it'll be dead in both environments, not just one environment.

What is the CD drive plugged in to? It's odd to see IRQ5 in use for a CDROM controller. What drive is it? It could be an I/O port conflict, but there shouldn't be any reason either Doom or Duke3D would need to access it. Maybe we should take a look at your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

A Cx486DrX2 33/66 on eBay a few months ago. Shoulda just done and got it. 🙁 And back in '95 or so someone offered me a Blue Lightning system, but I didn't think it would be much faster than my Am386DX-40+Cx386DX-40 system. I had bad memories of the PS/2 systems Kinko's had at that time,too...

FYI, the cloned drive with file system grown out by Gparted does not boot.
