Definitely do use the HIMEM and EMM386 that came with the distribution of DOS that you are using.

I would safely copy over all files that are important for keeping to a separate drive, and totally wipe this drive with zeroes. Afterwards I would use the fdisk from the bootdisk based on your OS of choice (Win98SE) on the machine in question to create and initialize the FS/partitions. Afterwards …

Got SMB sharing up on my 98SE SS7 machine via a 3com NIC, found the drivers at retronn.de. Will setup FTP later since SMB seems unsecure on Win 10 haha, also used one of these wireless nano routers in bridge mode because the PC is too far to get another ethernet cable routed. https://i.imgur.com/ …

I run an 2GB SD card via adapter via EZ-BIOS (Ez-Drive)... Thank you for the info. A photo of the mod would be nice, I hope I can order some similar sticks and do it myself finally.

Generally speaking, compatibility is highest when initializing / creating partitions and file systems on the machine in question / the machine that is going to use them. Some (inexplicable) problems just vanish when retrying on the target machine. Especially when breaking barriers like the 4 and 8GB …

I would be very much interested what 16MB modules turned out to be working for you in 8MB without boot errors or memory errors in general like upon Windows 3.11 install for example. Vanta cards only have 16MB of memory iirc. If it has "M64" somewhere on the back label it is not a Vanta.
