1. you need to remove the old battery, clean/repair the damage 2. You can't replace a rechargeable battery with a non rechargeable battery unless there is a external battery header you are connecting it to

good chance its some capacitors, those socket A boards are around the time of the capacitor plague and bad cheap caps

if there is no +12V and no +5V this is obviously a power delivery issue, nothing will start. You need to go and trace back where +12 and +5 have a possible common fail point and investigate what could of failed there

usually the psu doesn't start when the power plugs are plugged in the wrong way, maybye it was plugged in the wrong way previously and the power connectors, power. rails are shorted or something is fried. if you really really need it I have seen adapters as part of atx - > at converter that generate -5 but I think its not worth it

some sound cards use it, but not that many models I have 2 systems running with no -5 386 and 486 only had a problem with a soundcard before but I have many so used one that works

good job! if you haven't done so yet clean the flux residue on the reverse side of the board where the dip socket is soldered to. Even no clean flux can become corrosive in long term down the road

realistically the paste is there really to bond the 2 surfaces and fill the gaps as perfect as possible. So it doesn't matter how thin it is. It is about transferring the heat as most efficiently from the cpu to the heatsink. It is probably nice to have as much area covered by smudging the paste …

put a pea sized dot, put the hs on top and move it around in a circle motion then back to centre and clip the hs in, that should cover most of the surface

the answer is in the picture you linked the green and black cables with the prongs for the power button need to be connected together

what did you use a hand pump/sucker? or proper desolder gun? even if 1 or 2 of traces are not conducting it won't be a hard fix looks in decent condition
