Ambitious projects not being widely announced is how they keep from getting foxxed/DMCAd. People behind copyright-violating projects often catch a severe case of the stupids, and start promoting the project everywhere while collecting money.

My home's wiring is so old that it KILLED ME when I was plugging in an HDMI cable and touched the metal shielding on the plug. Catching 120V across the heart with God knows how many amps doesn't feel good, but neither does being revived. Found out how badly the house wasn't grounded when I hooked up …

Word to the wise, if you're buying Chinese tools, be sure to check the voltage of what you're buying, or you're going to have a coffee warming gun instead of a desoldering gun. Most of the cheap desoldering guns I've seen were rated for 200+V, making them about useless in the US.

Desoldering braid kinda' sucks unless you have some flux, and then it starts wicking it up like a fat guy on a milkshake. Or maybe it's just my ancient Radio Shack branded braid. Either way, without the right stuff, you're going to have it rough.

I've got a soldering manual from NASA of all organizations, but the biggest hurdle in soldering is MONEY. If you don't have good materials and equipment, you won't get excellent results with anything but basic soldering jobs.

Rock steady, as I keep it powered off 99.9975% of the time. Even when it's on, I don't do anything crazy with it, and I think a Linksys PCI ethernet NIC is going to have pretty stable drivers (normally the cause of many Win9X BSODs)

There are adapters that allow you to connect a proper floppy drive via USB, so you don't have to deal with the head alignment garbage of strictly USB floppy drives. Spiffy. As far as de-soldering goes, I lay the wick across the flux, then touch the iron to it so it melts and is wicked into the uh... wick. Then apply it to the solder that is to be removed. Seems to be effective, but nothing tops a Hakko, not that I'll ever have one.

I have no issues with the Sega CD, Saturn, PlayStation, and 3DO when it comes to reading CDR media, even burned at the maximum speed my SATA drive supports. I don't have any early CDROM drives. I think the oldest I have is like a 12X, which puts it well out of the realm of inquiry.
