The thermal pad theory is a plausible one. At this time AMD didn't have a reliable thermal protection circuit in their CPUs. I have an ASUS K7V motherboard that can handle a 1 GHz Orion no problem, but won't work with Thunderbirds above ~750 MHz. You'll definitely need to be careful with the size of the CF card. I have a slightly newer Gateway 2000 4DX2-66V which won't work with hard drives or CF cards larger than 512 MB.
