Did you consider using some sort of disk manager, like EZ-Drive or Ontrack Disk Manager? That's software supposed to do exactly what you're trying to achieve and it should be able to cope with existing BIOS support for IDE drives. EZ-Drive Dynamic Drive Overlay

Just to make sure I understand it correctly - you're trying to use the onboard IDE controller with XT-IDE BIOS in EPROM inserted into the 3Com network card, so there's just one IDE controller in the system. Is that correct?

The datasheed is here: http://pdf.datasheetcatalog.com/datasheets2/15/151380_1.pdf As I read it, it's not important, you will just lose signal on one serial port, nothing else. Did you try without cache as well? It should work.

Don't forget to put a piece of tape over the disk type hole, and if you're using an USB floppy drive, make sure it actually supports 720kB (noname drives usually don't).

Or if you ever mess with a *nix variant on a floppy-capable machine, you can just DD: dd if=/dev/fd0 of=myfloppy.img dd has the nice feature of easily destroying your hard drive content if you make a typo :) I would say that unless OP already knows dd (and then wouldn't need to ask), it's better …
