Re: Viewing the Upper Memory area

I managed to get a nice memory map by moving the pageframe up 1 row (using the M7 switch in EMM386), prohibiting UMBs above that and moving MSCDEX in the boot order. This fills my 81k of UMBs out of 90k available with very little fragmentation. It also increased XMS memory from 7100k to 7300k …

Re: Viewing the Upper Memory area

The A-Segment is used for EGA/VGA, too. Unless you're using something like CGA/Hercules graphics modes , it isn't available (free). I tried something similar in my thread about umbherc.sys a while ago and failed. There, I wasn't able to use Hercules video memory for UMBs (my PC/XT had CGA, so it …

Re: Viewing the Upper Memory area

You can tell EMM386 where to put the page frame, butting it down to the top of the video was the way i always set it - never had any issues with a non-default setting. With a boot selection, you could also choose to run with or without EMS, as the number of things that use EMS is quite limited - …

Re: Switching DOS into REAL mode

Oh ok I get it. So in real mode, memory is just treated as 1 contiguous piece of space but the mem manager is only able to allocate it into specialized blocks because of protected mode and what it can do so once you break it up like that you can't go into real mode or it'd break everything right? I …

Switching DOS into REAL mode

I tried to run memtest just recently and it complained about being in protected mode. Now the easy way to fix this is simply to run the bootable floppy but it got me thinking... what if I want to switch into real mode without rebooting? I did some reading and with a 386, it seems more than possible …

Re: ESS AudioDrive 1868F: Cracking/Popping

Thanks for the response. Something that I should have mentioned before is that the IBM 07h0849 version of this card does not have an IDE header, so nothing to worry about there as far as disabling it. The /J option in ESSCFG enables or disables the joystick port ("e" or "d'). There isn't a whole …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Thanks Kris for Operation Neptune. You've inspired me to give math a try again. I downloaded and installed Dosbox (Daum SVN), but the pipefish monsters come up and down very fast from the ground, and I have cycles set to auto. If I decrease the cycles to where the speed of the pipe worms are …

Re: QuickBASIC: Any DirectQB/BWSB tutorials available?

When I was in high school I took a programming class that was exclusively in QBasic. I saved all the lesson programs I wrote at that time. Just found them a couple days ago. Mind you they are way more basic than what you're talking about with these libraries. You're welcome to have them if you want …

Re: ESS AudioDrive 1868F: Cracking/Popping

I have the same card and find that the noise on the line varies considerably with the software and what's happening elsewhere on the computer (poor EMI shielding?). I don't know exactly what's causing the popping but I noticed in your esscfg line you have J:E, which means the CD-ROM header is using …
