Difference between 4231 and 4231A is that A adds a way to turn the chip into a dumb DAC + mixer for some external device. It is something no PC orientated thing uses, they want the controller part to be active too for WSS business.

That part is a clone of Altera's EPM7128SLC and from experience it is severely limited by lack "wiring" type resources. It is going to struggle with a bidirectional IO port which is one reason it got replaced by something else entirely in one test design I built : http://www.tmeeco.eu/HARDWARE/ …

it'd be really fun to clone the Gold! i think the "Gold Ctrl" should be fairly straightforward to implement in an FPGA. or possibly a CPLD, if it is simple. the YMZ263 looks hard to find so it should also go into the FPGA. I once looked at what it would take, and it doesn't take much to make a Level1 device. Level2 requires more effort for no gains as far as games go.

I imagine that you need to make the cache timings slowest possible, since you have very slow cache chips for a (fast) 486 board. It might help to lower bus to 25MHz for testing things too.

SERIRQ is the same as one on LPC. DMA lines are a special protocol, not related to the LPC bus. From what I remember the actual DMA signals are passed through ADxx lines on the cycles these signals indicate. But I may be wrong, I don't remember anymore and I might be mixing it up with something else …

Chips that have IC405A written on them do get hot but not this hot, this is definitely not normal.

I didn't use any software, I dumped them by desoldering the chips and popping them into a dedicated programmer device. It would be possible to read all the EEPROMs of any PnP device as part of the PnP process though but I don't know if any software exists specifically for it.

That Z80 is not a CPU but SIO, an UART chip. I imagine it is some data aquisition and processing card and not useful without its companion hardware and software.

486DLC has a mode where it flushes its internal cache as soon as bus is requested from the CPU. It should maintain compatibility with any board that doesn't have the 486 style cache control signals available. There is the Cyrix CPU setup util that allows to control these things.

You can short out the inductor and the part will come to life, albeit at slightly reduced performance. Actual inductance will probably not matter too much, but since it is a filter element, bigger is better, size should be 0805. Capacitor will be a 0.1µF X5R type in 0402 package.
