You are correct, BIOS-make doesn't cause the crash, so it must have been BIOS-option. GetFirmwareEnvironmentVariableA and GetFirmwareEnvironmentVariableW are indeed present! I don't what these do or if they work as expected. Sometimes the extended kernel functions are just "dummies" that do nothing …

FWIW, SIV32L and SIV32X (either one) crashes on my Win2000 socket AM2+ system when it gets to "UEFI info" if I try to save a report. Looked at the SMART data on some HDDs. My laptop has a 40GB Hitachi with 7,987 power ups, 13,968 start/stops, 15,315 hours running time, and 487,509 load/unloads. The funny thing is a 500GB WD-green that I just got two years ago has roughly double those numbers! No wonder it was cheap...

GeForce FX series should work fine in Win98. What version of DirectX is installed? Did you run dxdiag and see the spinning cube, etc. ?

16-bit DMA from 8237 is just 2 back-to-back 8-bit data cycle. The 8237 only has 8 data lines. The data lines on the 8237 are only used for accessing its internal registers. I think so, why not? For a 16-bit card to transfer to an 8-bit card it would have to test the MEMCS16 line and then split a word transfer into two bytes. That's assuming that the motherboard itself asserts MEMCS16 for system memory addresses, which is not clear. Even if this is possible the SCSI …
