Windows utilizes memory from the top down, so if you have more memory than can be cached you will feel the performance hit immediately. I think your issues are probably DMA related as well. Try configuring with a non-standard DMA like 3.

Actually with 5 pci slots you could probably build a beastly Win98 rig assuming you replaced all the subsystems with Win98 compatible pci cards. Video could probably still stay on PCI-E, as long as you used a x850 or one of the hacked Nvidia drivers.

If your loading the translator program in autoexec.bat you can use LH or LOADHIGH in front of the executable path.

You should be able to load your 'translation program' high. Maybe try QEMM or another 3rd party memory manager. I doubt you want to load the game high, some games have their own protected mode extenders which give them access to all the available memory.

I don’t think AMD threw in the towel, AMD had to split resources between CPU and GPU development. Hopefully AMD can return to glory with a modular multi chip approach (like Ryzen).

I think you should try to prevent Win3.1 from seeing drive volumes >2gb and Win98SE from seeing drive volumes >127gb. I believe both scenarios cause instability.

I'm going to guess your C: drive is >2gb or formatted Fat32? You should probably just use a Win98SE boot disk unless you really have a need to run DOS 6.22.
