AthlonXP supports SSE2. Intel / AMD must have reached a deal by then.

I’m having trouble thinking of anything that absolutely requires SSE. MMX was a line in the sand for a lot of games, and I remember some games like Quake4 require SSE2. Not sure if SSE v1 just wasn’t that revolutionary or if developers just didn’t want to commit to SSE vs 3dnow.

Ahh good info. I just looked into it, apparently there is another big part of this is the motherboard being able to map into memory addresses above 4gb. So while your right:it's likely the OP will only lose 256/512mb of system ram because his system is fairly modern, that might not be true on legacy …

I don't know if there is a workaround ( /PAE ?) but from what I recall if your using XP 32bit then vram will subtract from your total available memory. Example if you choose the 2gb R7 240, then you will have less than 2gb available for system memory. You could always run XP 64bit but from what I've …

Retro seems too soon since the 400/500 series still officially support DX12, although I'd guess there's some software emulation helping certain functions.

I don't see any problems with your plan to run XP. There were some very rare pc games released < 2009 that require Vista, mostly because MS was trying to encourage Vista adoption not because they truely used DX10. Games like Shadowrun or Halo2 (PC).

I would give QTWeb a try. Dillo is even more lightweight, but it's rendering is pretty poor.

Back in the day, you would use software/service called Kali.net which created a IPX VPN over TCP/IP. It's not free, but there used to exist a 15min DOS trial version. I'm at work, Kali.net is blocked so I cant see the current status of the service.

I would guess you have a hardware issue and not a software one. Do you play any other games enough so that you would notice similar issues? Like other games that don’t use EAX run fine? If you swap in a different sound card or use onboard sound you have no issues with Jedi Outcast?
