maybe the clock divider on the system board doesn't like that bus speed, and it makes the ISA bus go too fast or too slow for some reason. between 8-10 mhz is what the isa bus should run without issues. ISA slots don't run at a fixed speed, on most systems they should run at like 8.6mhz or something …

The cable management is really good. A+ No floppy or CD though. so I got to deduct points for that. Ram is a little low side 256 MB feels much better on 98se. Still nice.

ya I actually used the IDE driver from adaptec. Also see here http://www.ryston.cz/petr/vlb/adi2.html As you can see it is sthe same as the AIC-25VL01 ADI/2, , CL-PD7220, AIC-25VL01

whether or not you need a vlb io depends if the board has integrated io, and if the board is a vlb board you need a vlb vid card, unless its a pci board then go with a pci vid card. u can get a pci based board with integrated io. Save yourself some time. pci would not be period correct tho. for 1993 …

the appian ADI2 bench is not accurate. the ADI2 is the same chip on the Adaptec AVA-2625VL EIDE controller. I get 10k reads on a 386 with that. Did you even use the driver for it?

You can make a eltorito style 98 cd with Nero 5 and 6 maybe other versions using the a floppy img as the boot sector.
