Re: Stuck on GPUs

I have a feeling I'm going to be searching for a while. I might just downgrade the ATI machine to an 8500 (which I CAN find) and then keep my eyes peeled for a Ti 4600 in the meantime. I think I actually have a Ti 4200 kicking around somewhere, so I can always throw that in while I wait. Wish I'd …

Re: Stuck on GPUs

For this system I wouldn't sacrifice compatibility with older DOS titles by switching to a Radeon. I'm sure they work fine most of the time, but they were known for having lots of compatibility issues, where as nvidia generally wasn't. This is the thing I am 100% most worried about. Most of the …

Re: Stuck on GPUs

Man, I almost wish you hadn't told me that. So I've already got one build, currently with a Radeon 9800XT in it. Would you swap that for, say, a 9700 Pro, or maybe an 8500 since it was their last DirectX 8 card? Or just keep the 9800 XT? It's inarguably the better card, but I'm almost wondering if …

Re: Period correct build?

I have a 486 33Mhz pc for dos games, so dos support isn't that important. But I think it will be good for wide range of windows games. Ahh, yeah you should be perfectly fine then. I didn't realize you already had an old machine for the older stuff. Yeah I'd say anything that XP machine won't handle …

Re: Period correct build?

I think you might have some trouble with older Win9x and DOS games with new GPUs, but things on the later end of the Win9x spectrum should be great on that rig. Super lucky you've got a late 2004 board with Win98 drivers since even Microsoft stopped supporting Win98 January of that year.

Re: Stuck on GPUs

Well alright, I'm convinced. I'm going to keep looking for a Ti 4800... I think, if I can't find one within a month or so (all I can find are SEs) I'll settle for a 4600. I'll couple that with the Intel chipset + Tualatin CPU and 512MB PC133 and I think that'll be about the baddest machine as I can …

Re: Period correct build?

My main idea with this build was that every hardware in the system must have win98 drivers, so it can run both win98 and winXP and no yellow exclamation marks in device manager in win98se. Most parts are from the pc I used back in 2006 or close to that. I think you're going to be hard-pressed to …

Re: Period correct build?

Personally, I would extend "period correct" to anything I could conceivably upgrade from the original build without having to replace the motherboard. It's kind of like "wear items" on a car that way, I think. Power supplies and hard drives are like brake pads and tires IMO. The only line I draw is …

Stuck on GPUs

Hi all, I'm either retooling or rebuilding my retro build and I am totally stuck on GPUs. This machine is built to play anything designed for DOS or Win9x, released up to the time of Windows XP. So call it October 2001 with Return to Castle Wolfenstein being the highest-spec title I'd play on it. …
