ATI cards lacked support for table fog and 8 bit textures. The 9700 pro is faster and might let you run games with more filtering, but the 4600 ti is plenty overkill for 98.

i don't see period correctness as a big deal cause how inflation-ed the prices for some items and/or rare to find (8800 ultra is a good example - which i looked online most prices was the same cost as new modern graphics cards) I would suggest a GTX 960 then. Sony 100es is 13 inches I think. I have one and it's a very decent. Don't shy away from a good shadow mask though.

My audigy 2 sounds very clean. I like it a lot. You will want to install the VXD driver through device manager, don't bother with the creative installer.

Apparently A3D 2.0 drivers have trouble with direct X newer than 7.0A. I have the card but I haven't run into it yet, but people say it so I trust them 🤣

There are some driver versions for later cards that can cause minor incompatibilities with some games. 2010 is the 9800gtx+ and 9800gx2 as far as graphics go. Personally I prefer to polarize. I have a quadro FX 2000. I use rivatuner in windows 98 to configure the card as a FX 5800, and it is plenty fast. Due to driver overhead, a 4600 ti is usually going to perform the same or faster, but in XP the FX cards are a lot better.
