Re: Can it be done?! Should it be done?!

You know, checking out the NuXT product page, and watching LGRs video, I would absolutely support a brand new, small batch $400 Super Socket 7 board with new components and modern conveniences over a $50-$150 ebay auction of unknown provenance and longevity. The biggest hurdle I reckon would be …

I haven't seen a single cheap socket 7 motherboard in the 3 years I've been on the market. Can anyone make a new socket 7 motherboard of half decent quality for less than what they go for on ebay? You might feel that Socket 7 motherboards on ebay are expensive, but a new one would probably be …

The point is to run DOS, Windows 3.1-XP on a single machine that outperforms original hardware and be able to use some vintage sound cards with superior performance, which you can certainly do. People have installed Windows 3.1 on "modern hardware" with no issues, thanks to the knowledge we now …

Why not ask for a pony too? Why would you want a multi-core CPU to run DOS or Windows 3.1 on? Neither type of software supports that the multiple cores, huge amounts of memory or hard drives you are proposing. Full DOS sound: so what sound card do you emulate ... will it be the SB 1.0/1.5, SB 2.0, …

Good question. Well, the whole capitalism concept is strange in itself. If you make profit, someone else has to suffer. It's like a shuffling around of resources. It think that was the whole concept of 'Monopoly' originally - to sensitize people for this matter. Those are philosophical questions I …

Supposedly intel developed an emulator so you could run 32bit x86 on the ia64 platform. Thankfully they (intel) finally saw the light and adopted amd's x86-64 instead of ia64 for the xeons. The fatal flaws with ia64 was that it was stupidly expensive and exclusive. Like mind-bogglingly stupid …

Raspberry Pi is proprietary, expensive and overly complicated (ARM core controled by a GPU with a binary blob that runs a custom Linux containing billion of lines of code and dozen of background processes). Considering old computers with parallel ports are more expensive theses days then a low end …

Re: S3 Trio64V+ corruption/garbled text on boot

Out of curiosity, wouldn't "baking" a graphics card melt the plastic in the VGA and DVI connectors? Probably. But they are high temperature plastics, can probably survive 200C (just). A lot are designed for reflow soldering, so can take a certain amount of heat. Electrolytic capacitors really don't …

Sadly, new computers get rid of all this stuff which makes it harder for hardware developers to program simple thinks like making a computer turn on an LED light. You could just buy a USB GPIO Module: https://numato.com/product/32-channel-usb-gpio-module-with-analog-inputs/ Little risk of cooking …

I probably wouldn't bother trying to fix it now. S3 Trio/Virge PCI cards are a dime a dozen. Just get another …

Re: S3 Trio64V+ corruption/garbled text on boot

Yep, you need to reflow the solder joint of the memory module that you pressed which made the display ok. Baking the card won't do that, it will just cook it (which is not what you want to do) A good soldering iron, flux and maybe a touch of solder will fix that memory module right up in a fraction …
