Could you please try the Tantalum capacitors near the AT power connector. Those are known to fail after some time. Maybe you need to check the ESR value. I might be mistaken, but the connector on the bottom of the board might be a riser of some kind? Cannot tell for sure...

I think the cooler should go the other way around. You see those two cuts on the bottom of the heatsink? Those cuts should go on top, without touching, of the VRMs on the left and top of the Socket. Hope what I said is understandable. Also you don't need that much thermal paste.

I've had through my hands many G100 and G200. About 80% of them didn't work (post). IMO they're one of the most faulty ones on the Matrox G Line... G400, G450, all the Millenium and Mystique editions almost always work.

If you can put it on a system with integrated graphics set as primary, I think you can force flashing a VBios.

Ok. so I didn't want to ruin a working Vga cable by removing one pin, so I did something else. I set the primary Video Card on BIOS the one from the AGP slot, and inserted the card in a PCI slot. The Fx3400 should be able to handle early Xp games. If you want to upgrade, get a cheap midrange card from 2010-2014, either Nvidia Or Amd. Make sure the card doesn't require any other power (6-pin). For gaming no. This card won't use its 4 "cores" like a Sli card like Voodoo 5 or Fury MAXX would. Instead it can run 4 instances simultaneously. Still for $20, out of curiosity, since it also comes with the cables, you should consider if you'd use it or keep in the collection.

The Radeon 7000 would me more period-correct, but performance wise the 5900xt is miles ahead. I'd go for the second. Also btw that Stealth 220 is really great card to have in the collection.

That is a nice card, I think you totally should try to fix it. If not, I'm sure there will be people (me included) that would want to trade that non-working card for another more common but working Voodoo 3.

Those numbers don't tell the whole story, you need to check reviews for specific card to find out more about performance. And btw, that decision of having the Bios locked to one card only its a d*ck move from the companies. I mean, why not give the option to upgrade to another faster gpu like in PCs …

Imo Intel i440BX motherboard is the gold standard for Win98. But if you can find cheaper i440LX or any Socket 370 with VIA chipset you should be good. Also IMO the 3dfx Voodoo 3 is one of the best Graphic Cards for Win98, but they don't come cheap, so maybe you can get a better deal on a GF2Mx. …

Is the 6600 an MXM card? If so maybe you can find on ebay compatible MXM cards and try them on the same laptop. Just a suggestion, never had an experience with them.
