Not in my experience and not by a long shot. Every GeForceFX card that I have tried has an uncanny smoothness to its DOS output that is not a VGA signal issue, it most certainly has to do with how it's outputting 320x200 and text just never looks crisp to me regardless of whatever card or monitor …

I'm very impress by the Geforce FX series picture quality. For retro build they are my first choice for picture quality. After that comes Voodoo 3, Tnt2, Geforce 2, 3 and 4 and S3 Virge DX. I am pretty certain that you have inverted your 720x400 and 640x400 sampling pictures . 640x400 sampling should be the one that displays correctly (proper letter width in Doom status bar) when VGA card is in 320x200 . EDIT : I am really not sure with there are no sampling artifacts in your 1:1 VGA …

Maybe that's a quirk of my motherboard then. But neither Windows 98 or XP would boot with it in UDMA mode, the Linux kernel has tons of errors too. Disabling UDMA solves these issues completely. It's not the cable either, using a regular drive in UDMA mode works fine.

I found out an interesting behaviour of the GeForce GTX 960: when the VGA output is directly connected to the monitor, it outputs 1920x1080@60 which is not helpful. However when connected to the OSSC instead, it produces a correct picture without doubled pixels when 320x200 (such as DOOM) is sampled …

Indeed 😀 The OSSC approach also has the advantage of being able to switch at will between 640x480@60 Hz and 720/640x400@70 Hz, which is not possible with the EDID hack without switching EDIDs and rebooting the PC.

I already have a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, and will receive soon a Voodoo 1. Would it be worth getting a Voodoo 2, eg. are there games that would work better with it than a Voodoo 1 or 3?
