Nice build. A side question: you must really love old mechanical HDDs 😁 Why not some old SSD? That would be much smoother experience.

Also worth to mention, these CPUs are underpowered for this GPU. You'd most likely not get 100% gpu utilization in games. This Clawhammer is the closest to optimal.

ATI drivers always had a lot more of CPU overhead comparing to nvidia. I would suggest to go with high clocked Core2Duo with high IPC. Core 2 Duo E6600 oc'ed to 3..3.1 GHz will do the job.

Yeah, BSD-like systems are cool. I like the idea also, most probably you will get a nice OS, but some technical knowledge is required if you want to go this path.

I installed Windows 2000 on a single core Athlon64 3200+ then after couple weeks of normal use upgraded to dual core X2, maybe Windows setup has installed a single core HAL or something?

I use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Borland C++ 5.02, Paint Shop Pro 6 and the others 😁 Actually I like that software.

That is true, E8600 is still very powerfull CPU. I also own this chip and it does very well even in comparison with quad core AMD cpus (I compare it here to AMD Athlon64 X4 620).
