This is not very helpful. Tell us about the machine this is happening to, what kind of specs you have there etc. Share your autoexec.bat, config.sys and msdos.sys files with us as well. Otherwise, there's really not much to go on.

Try reinstalling Windows 98SE using the p and i switches (type "setup /p i") to ensure that you are installing using APM.

Unless you run something that can leverage HW T&L or introduce a GPU bottleneck by running in very high resolutions, 3Dfx cards from Voodoo2 and up should be faster by virtue of putting less of a driver overhead.

I gave WPCRedit a go and unfortunately, as expected, the result is the same as with TweakB. As soon as I go and tweak that register, the system hangs. So I'm willing to agree with bakemono 's assumption. I think BIOS modding might be my only chance, unfortunately opening up the BIOS in a hex editor …
