Do you have your HDD and ODE on the same IDE cable? That can lead to trouble sometimes, especially on quirky chipsets. I prefer to use older versions of 4in1 on Apollo Pro133A. I've found 4.35 and 4.26 to work pretty well, a bit more headache free if you will.

Is DMA enabled? Have you tried using an HDD instead of an SD card? Keep in mind Wizardry 8 is a bit too much for the K6-2+ and Voodoo 3. You'd ideally want a much faster system than this, despite it being graphically somewhat behind the times for when it came out.

That's a good catch and perhaps it's the culprit. I would also perhaps try uninstalling Vortex's drivers, though removing it should be enough.
