If your motherboard's BIOS support booting from CDROM you can install the CDU release of DOS 7.1 that way I can't promise you "perfect" compatibility but I've run it for years with no problems

I've seen this exact problem on P2/P3 boards with there is an option ROM installed they don't like (video, SCSI, etc.)
