@antilles a P4 3.2ghz barely beats out the Athlon XP 3200+ so take your pick really. both systems can run hot with the top processors so cooling can be expensive/complicated. I'd go with whatever motherboard/cpu combo is cheapest. as for the 5v topic, you'll need at least 35w of 12v for an athlon xp …

I haven't had a single issue with my Viper V330 Riva 128. Paired with a Monster 3D Voodoo I get full compatibility for DOS and Windows 95 era 3D games. i am so close to buying a v1 to pair up with a riva too. performance wise the riva is just fine but the voodoo is just a bit better on the renders. …

Switching FSB speed on-the-fly normally works fine. I've built two systems with such a switch and there are no issues. That header, however, is not meant for non-factory use. i'm no expert with mosfets but check the capacitors around it. maybe these mosfets run hot. if it's getting to 80deg c then even a heatsink might struggle. what voltage you running the cpu at? auto? if so, set it manually. it could be buggy.

yea i had similar issues with some of the later drivers (it could have been a 3rd party driver), but changing to a directx 7 set of drivers fixed the 3d accelleration issue. i think it was after a complete w98 reinstall too, and i only put directx7 onto the machine - then heaps of games started …
