Prevent Vortex2 trying to load au30dos.com

Any tips on how to prevent Vortex2 drivers automatically trying to load the dos driver? I have a Diamond MX300 Vortex2 PCI sound card installed along a YMF 718 ISA sound card. The Vortex2 is only needed for Windows, but the driver insists on loadind au30dos.com from autoexec.bat and dosstart.bat. It …

Re: Half-Life Performance Issues

D3D in Half-Life is not that bad, but OpenGL is faster and more stable, I guess owing to the engine's roots in id tech 2. Not sure what was going on with that G400 there. With OpenGL you don't get overbright lighting on textures (a type of early bloom lighting effect). I would rather play it in D3D …

Re: Oldest video card with DVI?

I have an IBM OEM Number Nine-made S3 Savage 4 Xtreme with DVI from late 1999 - here's a stock pic of the card: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c6/Number_Nine_SR9_SGRAM_AGP_16_MB_DVI_S3_Savage4_Xtreme_%2886C398%29.jpg/1200px-Number_Nine_SR9_SGRAM_AGP_16_MB_DVI_S3_Savage4_ …

Quake 3 is an interesting OpenGL example because you are probably seeing the best ATI could muster. It was critical …

Re: 3dfx Voodoo 1 and 75 MHz FSB

Voodoo cards are sensitive enough to PCI bus usage even when not run out of spec. On my Sis 651 chipset, I can use a 3GHz P4 with a Voodoo as long as none of the integrated stuff on the motherboard touches the PCI bus - something that's configurable in BIOS. But if I move the USB controller or …

Re: To end the AMD v. Intel debate.

To me, AMD's modular design of Zen2 is a choice resulting from technological and economical constraints of the time. Similarly to placing L2 cache next to the cpu, running at half the speed, and combining it all in a slot package in the mid-late 90s. I don't necessarily see it as some paradigm shift …
