You sure that isn't just being caused by bad capacitors in the laptop and/or the AC adapter? You may want to try the original OS that it came with. There are recovery CDs for your model (some are in german IIRC). https://archive.org/details/LegacyThinkPadRecovery As for using it for gaming, Pentium 90 is fine for playing Doom and maybe Duke3d on low settings. Quake is not really playable.
