I recapped some of my AT power supplies - 3 so far, but planning on recapping all of them. The tantalum caps on some of these are ticking time bombs. I won't be switching to ATX PSUs any time soon.

the board in the first post looks a lot like my QDI Legend socket 4 mainboard. Same chipset, same board layout, but my board has all 3 VLB slots soldered on. Can't remember the model and I don't have it on location, but I'll check when I get back home.

Sure there are. You take any AT PSU and replace the fan with an 80mm Noctua or Thermalrigh => boom! Quiet AT PSU. Thinking back then was to use the PSU to exhaust warm air from the case and as such most fans that come with AT PSUs are high RPM and rather noisy.

The PC is fast enough for most win9x titles up to 1998-early 1999 - I see no reason to upgrade it. Some speed sensitive DOS games won't run properly on in tough.

There's no need to go overboard on the GPU. A geforce 3 Ti200 or a Radeon 8500 are the fastest cards you could get for this build. The CPU is a bottleneck for newer cards. If you go newer then a Geforce 4 Ti / Radeon 9600 you could actually start to see a drop in performance VS using older cards. …

max ram support is irrelevant if the motherboard cannot cache it. For 512MB of ram you need a lot of L2 cache, more then a 486 motherboard can support. I think the most ram a 486 board can cache is 128MB with 1MB of L2 cache - I might be wrong, but if I am somebody here will correct me.

Same here OP. I've had over 12 boards fail in the course of 18 months. I've started to replace capacitors (all of them) and in some cases MOSFETS on boards I use (or plant to use) frequently, I'm hoping that will prevent failures. I've also purchased anti static bags for all my stored hardware.
