Re: Best OS for a 286?

maxtherabbit wrote on 2022-02-25, 01:08: EMS on a 286 must be implemented in hardware. Either an expansion card or (preferably) through the motherboard's chipset. Not really, see EMM286 - though it does have certain limitations.

I've had no luck running DOS 7.1 on a 286 or 8088 this week. Fails after boot with a flashing cursor in the top left, no error message. But which? There are at least two DOSes that identify themselves as 7.10: - MS-DOS 7.10, shipped with Windows 95OSR2..98SE - well-known to use 386+ instructions - …

Re: Max colors from WD90C31

So then I looked at the RAMDAC thinking that might tell me if that limits it to 256 color, making the question of the controller chip moot. That has triple 6 bit DACs so it's clearly capable, and the question still remains. Every VGA RAMDAC has three 6-bit DACs, therefore 2^18 colors - but not …

Re: Landmark Hertz

Is it possible that an LED behind the "LANDMARK" text would only light up in deturbo mode? No LED there... AFAIK this particular system used an actual 16MHz processor. In this case, I would expect the "LANDMARK MHz" to be at least 20... unfortunately, that particular machine got upgraded to 486, …

Landmark Hertz

I've just spotted this box: landmarkmhz.jpg ...and one thing made me chucke - the frequency "counter" marked as LANDMARK MHz The story behind Landmark "frequency" is fairly well known - it benchmarked CPUs relative to the original IBM AT, which used wait states, therefore zero-wait-states 286 clones …

Seriously, I'm wondering what's the record diskette count for a single software product? My candidate is Microsoft Office 97, with 46 diskettes. Just imagine this: shuffle around for hours with forty-six floppies, and finally... Clippy! 🤣 The Ultimate Masochist Experience 🤣
