Does that WinBios support options like NORMAL/LARGE/LBA ? If yes, make sure it's set to LBA. If not, can't use >528 MB without special software, eg. Ontrack Disk Manager.

I've had no luck running DOS 7.1 on a 286 or 8088 this week. Fails after boot with a flashing cursor in the top left, no error message. But which? I have an argument in favor of the Crystal: WSS compatibility, might come in handy some time... Edit: that also means 48 kHz, while the ESS is limited to 44 kHz.

The CD-ROM connector on CT1600 is for Panasonic (also sold as Creative) drives. What exactly model is that Mitsumi drive? You need either a card with Mitsumi proprietary interface (eg. CT2600), or IDE interface.

PRE-COMP is irrelevant for IDE drives. Same for LAND ZONE, unless you have one of those very early drives, with stepper, not larger than 80 MB or thereabouts. Only CHS values matter - as already stated, make sure that neither of them is greater than actual.

SB 16 PCI is based on ES137x, same as SB PCI 64, SB PCI 128, etc. There's nothing better about them compared to SB Live.

I have recently tested a bunch of PCI NICs, including one 3Com: 3C900-TPO and the results are: 3C90XPD.COM 4.0d - OK 3C90XPD.COM 5.2.6 - the driver loads, but fails to send and/or receive any packets Never delete older versions!
