Another grip is the loss of Analog Devices onboard audio ICs. They were good, cheap, and didn't do multichannel audio. Well, maybe not everyone's cup of tea. Now that I think about it, I think MIDI intelligent mode should have waited until the modern era when the sound modules are connected by USB. …

K, Final Fantasy 8 does have a DLS file, FF8.dls and not a soundfont. The game does not have a MIDI output mode. It does have "DirectMusic port." This is where the MIDI output device is selected and is very much like the Windows MIDI control panel that is no longer with us. The default is "Microsoft …

Honestly, I wish Ada had won the programming wars. It has lexigraphical functionality that only Perl has, and Windows needs for multiple languages. Like C# and C++ and Java, it works with C. It also might have meant that frankenbrowser Firefox, which is the prettiest and uses Perl and C++, may have …

The most similar thing to Java in C++ is wxwidgets. I don't know if they caught on. There's no layout editor and you invoke the GUI in the software instead of importing a resource (pre-defined dialogs).

I thought that .NET framework was so Visual C# and Visual Basic would share WPF in the framework, not the core. I understand Visual Basic came out of the desire to customize Office with VBA or something? Visual C# has a lower entry price than Java, because without the SlickEdit plugin, I don't care …

Are you trying to write drawing code to cmd.exe? The fact that the excercise says to compile in C and not C++ means the excercise is invalid. "Build solution" is how you compile and then "start debugging." That's true whether it is a console app or a desktop app. These commands are in the Visual C++ …

Without MFC, how do I define the dialog that I create? You don't actually need MFC to do any dialog editing. MFC is just a "easy mode" to raw WinAPI resources. I basically followed this tutorial though it's quite a mouthful. You basically have to manually define everything, alot of which has to …

I tried reinstalling Visual Studio 2019 and paying extra attention to the detailed settings. It didn't make much difference. I can do a console app or a desktop app (they are separate project types) in C++. But without MFC or directshow I don't see how to manipulate this very much. The old system …

With cassette tapes, what would probably make them sell is switching to high bias, which is the type of blank tape that sold. But that would be a knock against the poor. I think I may have seen that last few pre-recorded cassettes for sale or something, if the Dolby license has expired, they don't …

Maybe that nostalgia in it's truest form? reliving the tech without the benefits? As lets face it, a household may have had 1 decent cassette deck but most round the house/car were average ;) Maybe I should start selling cheap "hipster special" retro PC's with crappy video and sound cards :P If …

SACD playback never getting to computers is why I was hoping for more 96 kHz options at 7digital. Also, AC-4 is stereo at 96 kbps according to the wikipedia. I decided to go back to my original post and add Denon is back as #14 of things going right. They are back, with phono inputs, and are better …

SACD is a different focal length, so there are no commercially available disc drives that can even read them. It doesn't mean they don't make them for some people. Also, for broadcast, you would need to resample it down to CD quality.
