The Mach32 are very good cards for DOS and Windows for its time, if you don’t need 1600x1200. Also the drivers for Windows and DOS (little TSR for VESA compatibility) have a good quality. The best variant is one with VRAM, 2MB (for memory interleave) and ATI68875 RAMDAC (135MHz).

I would highly recommend to change capacitors (in power circuit) first before proceed with your experiments. Bad capacitors can cause extreme stress to the FETs, so that these can die and some Miliseconds later the VSA will die.
