This happens while the OAKCDROM and MSCDEX drivers are not loaded. I have an elaborate AUTOEXEC+CONFIG which bypass everything but HIMEM for loading the OS. I haven't tried loading these drivers before starting Windows, though.

I have used an external USB drive with Win98 without issues well over 128GB. My current setup uses a Pi and an SMBv1 share. I think it’s strictly a limitation with the onboard HDD controllers and BIOS at the time.

Yeah, that check in the control panel, 1024x768, and running benchmarks is pretty much all you need. I generally throw Deus Ex at it as a practical test, as an example of a late life Glide game that will tax pretty much any 3dfx hardware you throw at it.

I discovered that the ExpertColor MED3700 is not recognized by SETYMF, although using the /FORCEPNP command line seems to recognize things just fine. In my infinite wisdom, I accidentally overwrote the existing PNP EEPROM without backing up the existing one. I would love to have sent this in. Whoops …
