Re: Thoughts on rebuilding an XT PSU versus swapping in newer AT PSU board into the old XT PSU case

I have one of those ~19V DC-DC ATX power supplies (rated for ~150W) and the board itself is quite small. So I might gut the PSU (saving the board for future repairs!) and install a 19V power brick [maybe salvaged from a beefy gaming style laptop?] inside, along with the DC-DC supply and an ATX->AT …

Re: Dallas DS1225Y?

Ok on closer look that is an EISA board (sorry, I missed it first look) so the DS1225Y probably holds the EISA .CFG data. You should be able to get a standard SMC 37C75, 82C765 or equal FDC ISA controller to work to get the floppy working IF you can get into the BIOS. EISA has fall backs that …

Re: Thoughts on rebuilding an XT PSU versus swapping in newer AT PSU board into the old XT PSU case

Mine is the old side paddle switch type. The easiest/cleanest way would be to just run the switch wires to the board where the two wires are that the atx/AT adapter jumps to turn it on. If you wanted it really clean, you could just replace the ATX motherboard connector harness with the AT …

Re: Dallas DS1225Y?

Yes that could be an issue ! The DS1225Y does store data (some 64k worth) so if battery in it is dead it will not save that data if computer is turned off. What that Dallas chip stores is unknown but must be important or they would NOT have included it in the board design. Makes me think about a old …

Re: Thoughts on rebuilding an XT PSU versus swapping in newer AT PSU board into the old XT PSU case

I'm contemplating something similar for a 286 build though I haven't opened up the original PSU yet. It is an Everex Step 286 case. Was hoping to find an original board but have pretty much given up on that. Already have a different board to go in there but not really sure I trust the super old PSU …

Re: Thoughts on rebuilding an XT PSU versus swapping in newer AT PSU board into the old XT PSU case

I have a dead PSU in my IBM 5160 XT, and am also wondering about repair vs replace. I haven't tried to diagnose the PSU failure yet, it's a bit beyond my abilities still. In favour of (attempting to) repair: keep the 5160 as close to original as possible! Thanks ! The reason for thinking of …

Re: Dallas DS1225Y?

Is there a battery inside dallas DS1225Y or is it just a ram chip? I have an early 486 full size AT motherboard that has 2 dallas chips DS1287 and DS1225Y, so I am wondering if I need to change both of them or is just changing DS1287 enough. I have had the motherboard for over 2 years now and I am …

Thoughts on rebuilding an XT PSU versus swapping in newer AT PSU board into the old XT PSU case

I have a Laser LX XT/3 complete old computer but the original PSU is starting to show signs of failing. Thought about rebuilding the original 180w PSU (~ 1989 era) but on close inspection it has basically no Short-circuit, Over-voltage or any of the better protections found in later model AT PSU. …
